Iona MSOC Downed on the Road at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, MA - The Iona University men's soccer team fell on the road at Holy Cross on Saturday, 2-1. Senior Camil Azzam Ruiz netted the opening goal of the match in the 20th minute but two unanswered goals by the Crusaders decided the match.

MATCH SUMMARY

Azzam Ruiz, a 2022 Preseason All-MAAC selection, tallied his second goal in as many contests to open the scoring in the 20th minute. Backers Elird Mero and Tim Timchenko set the goal up for the senior striker, who gave Iona an early 1-0 advantage.

Holy Cross leveled the match just 11 minutes later when Jack Ostrosky scored his first goal of 2022. The score would hold heading into the halftime break. Out of the break, the match remained tied until the 78th minute. Ostrosky found the back of the goal once more, giving the Crusaders a late 2-1 edge. Iona dropped to 1-3-0 with the loss at the hands of Holy Cross.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Azzam Ruiz's goal was his second of the season and his fifth point. He paces the team in points with five and his two goals are tied with Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez for the team lead.
  • Mero and Timchenko had the assists on Azzam Ruiz's goal, the first points of the season for the two backers, respectively.
  • Juan Alfaro Monge made four saves in the loss, facing 13 total shots from the opposition.
  • Iona is now 0-1-1 all-time against Holy Cross. The two sides played to a 1-1 draw in the first-ever meeting between the two sides last season.
