Swimming & Diving Complete Final Day Of ECAC Swim Championships

The third and final day of competition in the 2023 ECAC Winter Swimming and Diving Championships wrapped up tonight at the Nassau County Aquatic Complex in East Meadow, NY. The Iona Men placed fourth out of 12 teams and the Iona women were sixth out of 14 teams.
 
NJIT won their first title with 1692-points on the men's side, with Monmouth (1279); Long Island (1063), finishing in the top three. The Iona men tallied 1049-points, ahead of MAAC rivals Mount Saint Mary's (775) and Marist (630).
 
The women's meet was won by Columbia (1876-points), followed by Stony Brook (1207); Siena (963); LIU (946), Monmouth (870) and Iona at 704.
 
The night started off for the Gaels in splashing style as Senior Michael Faughnan took his third gold medal winning the 200-yard Backstroke with a meet record time of 1:44.42. Teammates Kieran Egan took third at 1:47.16; Nate Wales (1:55.75), Elijah DeCasseres (1:56.15) and Matthew Woyksnar placed 14th, 15th and 16th, respectively.
 
The 100-Free saw Megan Josephs take ninth sat 52.20, with Isabella Nicholson 18t at 52.47. The men's race had Wales in eleventh at 46.53, followed by Blake Alford (46.91) in 19th place.
 
The 200-Breaststroke event had Brennyn Veit and Tristan Urson place 14th and 16th respectively at 2:27.34 and 2:29.00. The men's Breaststroke race had Mikel Palaj and Nick Patino take 18th and 21st with respective times of 2:10.47 and 2:13.81.
 
The 200-Butterfly race saw Ashley Benkert and Erin McKinney take eleventh and eighteenth at 2:09.55 and 2:11.26. The Iona men gained big points with Noah Gionta, 7th at 1;53.77; Brian Baldwin, 15th at 1:56.46; Chase Bateman, 21st at 1:58.73; and Andrew Diano, 24th at 2:06.12.
 
The 1650-Free, saw the Iona women place 8th, 9th, 12th, 16th, 18th, 21st for their largest scoring event of the meet. Anabel Huffstutler (17:43.76); Tristan Urso (17:49.50); Kate Kennedy (18:03.67); Katherine Sarnes (18:09.52); Hannah Forbes (18:14.73) and Elisa Vaher (18:16.60) were the six respective scorers.
 
The men's 1650 had Michael Faughnan take third at 15:48.71. Matthew Woyksnar was sixth with a 16:16.87 clocking. Andrew Diano claimed the twelfth spot 17:09.86.
 
The meet's final pair of events, the 400-yard Freestyle relay saw the Iona Women's quartet of Nicholson, Ela Goucher, Benkert and Josephs place fourth at 3:31.04.
 
The Iona men's squad of Faughnan, Egan Alford and Wales took silver at 3:01.95.
