Iona Rowing Earns Victory in all Four Races Against LIU

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The men's and women's rowing teams hosted Long Island University on Sunday morning at the Orchard Beach Lagoon. Despite wind gusts up to 30mph, the Gaels rowed well and won all four races contested.

Race Summary

The women's varsity eight lead things off completing the course in 7:31.9 for their second win in as many weeks. In the same race Iona's 2nd varsity eight in 8:53.

"The varsity eight is off to a great start this season, noted coach John Boyd."  "The spring break training trip to South Carolina was instrumental in developing the intangibles required for a crew to go fast. We're just getting started and I can't wait to see how this crew improves over the next several weeks. The 2nd varsity eight is far less experienced and absolutely should be one minute behind LIU's varsity at this stage. But despite their experience, they're rowing fundamentally well at race pace. This team is going to be fun to watch in the coming weeks and semesters."

The women also raced in a lightweight four against LIU. Coming off the previous day's performance picking up a pair of wins over Wisconsin, the Gaels established themselves early in the race in conditions that weren't exactly "lightweight" friendly.

On the men's side, the varsity eight also picked up its second consecutive win. Dariell Dopico and Zach Morocho kept the boat stable from the bow which allowed the crew to row a clean race down the track with a time of 6:35.5

Later the men broke down into a lightweight and heavyweight four which finished first and second respectively. The lightweights crossed the line four seconds ahead of their teammates after rowing with the lead for much of the race.
