Iona Trio Swims at CSCAA National Open Water Champs in Miami

MIAMI, FL - Fresh off the heels of a strong team performance at the December 6-8 ECAC Championships in Long Island, a trio of Iona swimmers traveled south to the Biscayne Bay and the campus of Florida International University in North Miami for the College Swim Coaches Association National Open Water Championships on Sunday.

The 5K race featured 108 Women and 95 men from two dozen schools across the USA including MAAC Rivals Sacred Heart, Marist and Fairfield.

Competing in her first open water 5K was sophomore Anabel Huffstutler, who placed 87th in the 108-swimmer field with a time of 1:15.25, twelve minutes behind the winner Ella Dyson of Rice University at 1:03.31.

The Men's field of 95-swimmers saw Junior Matthew Woyksnar finish the 5K course in 1:08.52, 8-minutes behind the winner, Ben Wainman of Saginaw Valley State. Classmate Andrew Diano completed his first 5K in 1:11.01 for 66th place.

Coach Nick Cavataro commented, "where the weather and water were in the 70's, the wind was and choppy conditions in the Bay were a challenge for everyone. I know Matt, Andrew and Anabel now have the confidence to swim in any conditions." The complete results can be found at https://www.splitsecondtiming.com/results/todays-races/

IUSD next contest will be January 18, 2025 when they host Fairfield University on Senior Day at 1pm.
