POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Iona University men's cross country team opened its 2025 campaign with a second-place finish at the Marist Season Opener, held at Vassar Farm in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Gaels placed runner-up in the five-team field in the 6k race.

IONA PERFORMERS

Freshman Ben Daniels paced the Gaels with a strong collegiate debut, finishing second overall in 19:32.8. Classmates Sean Lawton and Elijah Post added Top 10 efforts, placing eighth and ninth in 19:43.6 and 19:45.3, respectively. Junior Jack O'Keefe crossed the line in 17th place with a time of 19:58.3, while freshman Julian Laznik-Moraghan was right behind in 18th at 20:00.4 to close out Iona's scoring five.
 
Senior Caleb Deane placed 21st in 20:03.0, followed by sophomore Jack Novelli in 26th (20:19.3), freshman Carter Flowers in 28th (20:35.3), and junior Christian Audrin in 30th (20:46.4).

TOP INDIVIDUALS

The individual title went to Marist freshman Isaac Gross, who posted a winning time of 19:19.7. Daniels earned runner-up honors as the top Iona finisher, followed by Fairfield senior Ryan Lindley in third at 19:38.8. Marist's Chase Kober and UAlbany's Owen Stachilc, both freshmen, rounded out the top five in 19:40.4 and 19:41.2, respectively.

TEAM RESULTS

Marist claimed the team crown with 34 points, edging Iona's runner-up total of 54. UAlbany finished just behind in third with 56 points, while Fairfield was fourth with 73. Siena rounded out the field in fifth place with 155.

UP NEXT

Iona returns to action on Friday, September 12, when it hosts the 30th Annual Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The event begins with the Mick Byrne Men's Championship 5-Mile at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Joe Dula Women's Championship 5k at 10:45 a.m.
