Oelke Leads Iona Men's Golf at Matthews Auto Collegiate

APALACHIN, NY - The Iona University men's golf team continued its fall season at the Matthews Auto Collegiate, hosted by Binghamton University at The Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, NY. The Gaels, who won the team title at the event last season, finished fourth out of 13 teams, nine strokes behind tournament champion Bucknell.

Iona opened the tournament in a tie for ninth place after carding a 14-over-par 302 in the opening round. The Gaels responded with the best team score of the day in the second round, shooting a 5-over-par 293 to climb five spots and secure a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Jennings Oelke led the way for the Maroon & Gold, finishing second individually and just two strokes off the individual lead. Oelke opened with an even-par 72 before putting together an impressive final round. After opening his second round with eight consecutive pars, Oelke caught fire down the stretch and carded a 3-under-par 69.

Oelke's 69 was the only sub-par round recorded by any golfer in the field during the final round.

Ryan Slevcove finished tied for 18th overall. He opened with a 4-over-par 76 before posting a 2-over-par 74 in the second round. Sean Richards was Iona's second-lowest scorer in the opening round, carding a 74. He followed with an 80 in the second round to finish tied for 38th.

Lucas Vanderlip also finished tied for 38th after opening with an 80. He closed his tournament with a strong 2-over-par 74, including two birdies in the final round. Freddie Tucker rounded out Iona's scoring lineup, shooting an 81 in the opening round before bouncing back with a 76 in the second round.

Competing individually, Paddy Blinderman impressed in his first start for the Maroon & Gold. Blinderman opened with a 4-over-par 76 before carding Iona's third 74 of the second round, finishing inside the top 20. Jerry Lin also improved in the second round, carding a 79 in the opening round before finishing four strokes better with a 75. Lin finished tied for 38th.

The Gaels return to action at the Metropolis Intercollegiate, hosted by Columbia University at Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, NY.
