PROVIDENCE, RI - The Iona University men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Friar Invitational Friday at Ray Treacy Track at Hendricken Field, turning in a strong all-around performance highlighted by two event victories and several personal-best efforts.
400-METER RUN
Freshman
Jaylen Mozone captured first place in the 400-meter run with a time of 47.72 in his first collegiate outdoor attempt at the distance. His mark ranks as the fourth fastest in program history and is the second fastest ever by an Iona freshman, trailing only Doug Powell's 1980 performance. Sophomore
Jack Bretthauer placed seventh in 50.82, shaving half a second off his previous best from last year's MAAC Championship. Junior
Evan Gralitzer finished 11th in 52.21, and freshman
James Roche followed in 12th at 52.45.
MILE RUN
Junior
Scott Fagan led the Gaels with a first-place finish in the mile, clocking 4:11.26. His time ranks 11th all-time in Iona outdoor history. Sophomore
Jack Novelli also competed, placing 56th in 4:54.57.
200-METER DASH
Freshman
Joshua Aceto impressed in his first outdoor 200-meter race, placing second in 22.54, a mark that ranks 15th in program history. Freshman
Jaylen Mozone added a fourth-place finish in 22.71. Senior
Jiles Addison, competing at the Friar Invitational for the fourth time, recorded a personal-best meet time of 23.08 to place ninth. Sophomore
Dylan Donegan (10th, 23.12) and sophomore
Jack Bretthauer (11th, 23.14) followed, with Bretthauer improving his personal best by 0.3 seconds from last year's performance at UConn. Freshman
James Roche (14th, 23.29), junior
Derrick Touba (15th, 23.32), freshman
Joe Surozenski (16th, 23.35), and junior
Evan Gralitzer (20th, 23.81) rounded out the field for Iona.
110-METER HURDLES
Freshman
Wesner Archelus earned a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 16.05.
400-METER HURDLES
Freshman
Joe Surozenski placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 58.73, a personal best that ranks eighth in program history and improves his time by 1.5 seconds from last week's Metropolitan Championships. Freshman
Wesner Archelus followed closely behind in third place in 1:04.71.
100-METER DASH
Freshman
Joshua Aceto led the Gaels in the 100-meter dash, placing sixth in 11.31 in his first outdoor race at the distance, a top-25 time in program history. Senior
Jiles Addison finished seventh in 11.32, marking a personal-best performance at the Friar Invitational. Junior
Derrick Touba (11th, 11.50) and junior
Edmund Lok (13th, 11.74) also competed.
800-METER RUN
Sophomore
Caudell Cajuste made his outdoor debut in the 800 meters, finishing 40th in 2:01.46.
