LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL – Iona men's golf continued its strong play at the MAAC Championship on Tuesday, shooting 2-under as a team in round two to extend its lead to six strokes heading into the final round at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course.
The Maroon & Gold posted a team score of 2-under to maintain the lead in the 11-team field. Sacred Heart sits six strokes back in second at 5-over, with Siena also at 5-over. Fairfield holds fourth at 16-over, followed by Manhattan and Mount St. Mary's in fifth and sixth at 21-over and 25-over, respectively. Niagara and Merrimack are tied for seventh at 31-over, while Saint Peter's, Rider, and Canisius round out the field.
The Gaels were once again led by freshman
Jennings Oelke, who fired his second straight 2-under 70 and sits in second place overall, just two shots back of Siena's KC Nickel.
Connor Henderson turned in one of the key rounds of the day for Iona, carding a 2-under 70 to move into a tie for fourth place at 1-under for the tournament.
Sean Richards added an even-par 72 and is tied for 11th, while
Ryan Slevcove posted a 74 to sit tied for 17th.
Sahir Balyan rounded out the lineup with a 79 and is currently tied for 23rd.
With a six-shot advantage, Iona will look to finish the job in Thursday's final round. The Gaels are set to tee off between 10:15 a.m. and 10:51 a.m. as they aim to close out the MAAC Championship.
