BEARS TOP GAELS, 66-41

Providence, RI - The Iona College women's basketball team fell to 1-11 on the year after a 66-41 defeat to the Bears of Brown University Tuesday night at the Pizzitola Center. The Gaels shot just 27 percent from the floor as they dropped their fourth straight.

Junior forward Michelle Fahy (Galway Ireland) and freshman guard Melissa Yeagley (Sparta, NJ) shared scoring honors for the Gaels, pacing the team with 12 points apiece. It was the tenth time in Iona's 12 games that Fahy has held or tied for the team's high score.

The Gaels opened the game with solid play, holding an 11-10 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half on the strength of a pair of three-pointers from Yeagley. But Brown took control at that point, limiting Iona to a single field goal the rest of the half. The Bears took a 26-2 run into halftime with a 36-13 lead.

Fahy and Yeagley scored all of the Gaels' first half points, and the team shot just 17.9 percent in the game's first 20 minutes.

The Bears didn't let their lead dip below 22 points in the second half as Junior Tamara Golston hit for 10 of her game-high 20 points in the second stanza. Golston also dished out eight assists and junior Nyema Mitchell grabbed 11 boards.

Iona's starting backcourt of Yeagley and sophomore Sheena Howard (Philadelphia, PA) led the Gaels with six rebounds apiece. Despite holding a 14-13 edge on the offensive glass, Iona was outrebounded 48-38 for the game.

The Gaels continue their current road swing with their annual trip to the Buffalo area for a Jan. 17 match-up with Niagara, followed by a Jan. 19 contest at Canisius. Over the past seven seasons, Iona has a record of 8-6 during this northern swing, going 6-1 at Canisius and 2-5 at Niagara.
