Durham, NH - A hot-shooting University of New Hampshire squad proved too much for the Iona College women's basketball team on Sunday as the Gaels (2-3) dropped a 72-61 decision on the road. The Wildcats (2-2) hit 54.8% from the field for the game, including 8-of-16 from three-point range.
Tiara Headen, who missed the previous two games due to injury, returned to score 19 points for Iona. Lauren DeFalco came off the bench to pour in 13 in 25 minutes of action. Headen and DeFalco each connected on a trio of three-pointers.
Danielle Clark led four Wildcats in double figures with 21 points. Salee-Marie Johnson scored 12, while Danielle Flowers and Ashley Cerniglia had 10 each.
The Gaels trailed the entire way, allowing New Hampshire to jump ahead 21-8 on a Jenny McDade three with under 12 minutes left in the first half. The Wildcats maintained a comfortable lead until Headen connected on back-to-back triples to bring Iona within four at 33-29 with 40 seconds left. New Hampshire's Ray Williams broke free for a lay-up just before halftime to give the home team a six-point spread at the break.
After Regan Pettijohn's follow up lay-in got the Gaels back to within four, the Wildcats ripped off a 9-0 run to take control at 46-33. A DeFalco three at the seven minute mark cut the deficit to nine at 61-52 before Cerniglia responded with a trifecta of her own to snuff out the Iona rally. Strong free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the New Hampshire win.
