New Rochelle, NY - The history books are being rewritten by Iona women's basketball in 2006-07, as the Gaels are 6-0 in the MAAC and hold a five game winning streak, both for the first time as a Division I program. Iona (11-6, 6-0 MAAC) recorded a 59-55 victory over Manhattan (4-12, 1-5 MAAC) at the Hynes Athletics Center.
Martina Weber continued to prove right her preseason predictors, leading the Maroon & Gold with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and two blocks for her third career double-double and second of the season. Toni Horvath was giving for the Gaels as she handed out seven assists to move into second all-time at Iona.
Annie McIntyre was the Jaspers' leading scorer, recording 12 points on the afternoon.
Weber scored on a jumper and two free throws to give Iona an early 4-0 lead, but the advantage was short-lived as Manhattan battled back to tie the game at six with 17:44 on the clock. The Jaspers gained a seven point edge on a layup by Vanessa Davison. Despite a 16-8 Iona run over the final eleven minutes, Manhattan carried a one point lead into the second half.
Tiara Headen deposited two from the foul line to put the Gaels up by one in the first minute of the second period. The edge ignited the Maroon & Gold, who began to pull away. A three from Horvath with 13:29 remaining gave Iona a 12 point lead, the largest margin of the afternoon.
The Jaspers were not done, however, as they pulled back to within one on two Gabrielle Cotrell free throws with 1:26 to go. Headen hit three of four from the line in the final 20 seconds to lock up the win for the Gaels.
Iona is back in action against Fairfield on Jan. 19.
