Buies Creek, NC - A 58-57 defeat at Campbell marked the end of a two-game winning streak for the Iona College women's basketball team. The Camels' Marlena Murphy scored the final basket of the game on a layup with 11 seconds remaining to give her team a one point victory.
Tiara Headen was the high scorer of the contest with 20 points in her home state. She also reached her 1,000th career point early in the second half to become the 17th player in program history to reach the mark. Anna McLean posted another double-double with a ten point, ten rebound performance. McLean also recorded five blocks for the second consecutive time.
Murphy led Campbell with 15 points and 14 boards while the Gaels led 7-1 in blocks and 15-8 in steals for the evening.
After breaking out to a 10-0 lead by the 15:07 mark with buckets from four different players, Iona hit a dry spell and would not manage to score over the subsequent ten minutes. In that time, Campbell went on a 14-0 run to take a four point advantage. The Maroon & Gold finally came back on a free throw by Anda Ivkovic, and reclaimed a one point edge on a Lauren DeFalco jumper. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Camels registered the next seven points and carried a 25-22 advance into the second half.
The second period featured seven tied scores and Iona was in front for much of the 20 minutes. A Lauren Arthur three pointer put Campbell up by one with 28 seconds remaining, then two Thazina Cook free throws gave the Gaels a single point edge with 23 seconds to go. The lead was traded once again with two points by Murphy and Iona was unable to score again as time ran out.
The Gaels will be back in action to host Monmouth with a 2:00 pm game on Friday.
