Davis, CA - Junior Katie McGovern, sophomore Patrice Clark and freshman Molly Lapolla each had hat tricks as UC Davis exploded for nine second-half goals in a 14-7 win over Iona in a non-conference collegiate women's lacrosse match at Aggie Field Monday afternoon.
The Gaels fall to 2-1 overall.
McGovern recorded three goals with two assists for a team-high five points. Senior Megan O'Connor and freshman Olivia Jarem added two goals for UC Davis. The Aggies scored seven of the last eight during the final 20 minutes of play, breaking loose from a 5-5 tie at halftime.
Sophomore midfielder Christie Godlewski led Iona with three goals, while attacker Jillian Beck added two goals.
UC Davis took a 4-2 lead midway through the second half when Jarem assisted Alden Monger for a scoring strike at the 17:52 mark. The Gaels tied the game moments later as Jaclyn O'Leary chipped in a goal and an assist in the 22nd and 23rd minutes of play. Clark and Godlewski each traded eight-meter goals late in the first half to send the two teams into intermission in a 5-5 tie.
The Aggies took the lead for good early in the second half on a Lapolla goal at 33:41 followed by O'Connor's second goal at 35:59. Marisa Audley cut the deficit to 7-6 when she converted her eight-meter attempt, but that began the Aggies' second-half fireworks. McGovern had two goals and both her assists in the final 18 minutes of the game.
The Gaels outshot their hosts by a 15-9 margin and won eight of the 11 draws in the first half. However, the tables turned in the second half as UC Davis held a 17-9 shooting advantage and controlled 8 of the 12 draws after the break.
Aggie goalkeeper Hilary Harkins finished with seven saves, having stopped three of the first four shots she faced. Three different Gaels split time in the Iona crease, with starter Carlee Street picking up three saves in her 44-plus minutes.
