New Rochelle, NY - In its 2007 MAAC opener, the Iona College women's lacrosse team (4-3, 0-1 MAAC) dropped a 18-6 contest to Fairfield University (5-5, 2-0 MAAC) at Mazzella Field. Iona's three goal-scorers were Jillian Beck, Christie Godlewski, and Jaclyn O'Leary, each scoring twice.
For Fairfield, Erin Rigby led with four goals.
The Stags opened up the scoring with an unassisted goal by Amy Neville in the tenth minute. O'Leary answered back a minute later, firing one past goalkeeper Lauren Chatnik to tie the score at 1-1. From that point Fairfield scored five unanswered goals .
The Gaels stopped the streak with two of their own, as Beck and Godlewski contributed their first goals of the day with less than ten minutes remaining in the first half. Fairfield would add four more to take a 10-3 lead into the second period.
Iona refused to back down, charging hard in the opening minutes. Beck contributed two points in the first five minutes of the second half, recording an assist and a free position goal. While they would score once more in the game, the deficit proved too much to overcome.
The Maroon & Gold will look to notch its first conference win of the season, traveling to Marist on April 1.
