Iona falls to LIU on the road

Brooklyn, NY- In what is turning into an intense local rivalry, the Iona College women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 12-11 decision to Long Island University this afternoon at LIU Field. The Blackbirds (1-4) avenged two straight one-goal defeats from a the last two seasons with the victory over the Gaels (2-2).
Holding a 9-4 lead with 23 minutes to play, the Gaels surrendered eight of the game's last 10 goals. Sophomore Christie Godlewski netted her second goal of the game with just over three minutes to play to cut the deficit to one goal but LIU held on to the slim victory.
Junior Jaclyn O'Leary had a team best four goals. Godlewski, junior Kelly Hughes and sophomore Marisa Audley added two goals a piece in the loss. Audley pitched in two assists to tie O'Leary with her four points.
The Blackbirds were led by Jackie McCormick's four tallies and three assists.
Rookie GK Carlee Street stopped a season-best 14 shots. Her counterpart, Kimberly Campbell, registered nine saves.
In three season's of women's lacrosse at Iona College, the Maroon & Gold lead the series 2-1 over the Blackbirds. All three contests have been decided by one goal.
The Gaels return home for the first time since Mar. 6 when they face Villanova on Saturday (Mar. 23) for the first of a three-game homestand.
