Poughkeepsie, NY - The Iona College softball team was swept in a MAAC doubleheader at Marist this afternoon. Iona (9-16, 4-3 MAAC) fell 8-0 in the opener and dropped a 3-2 decision in the night cap.
The Red Foxes (15-22, 8-3 MAAC) scored all eight runs in game one in the first two innings, chasing Iona RHP Amanda Glaser in the first inning.
Marist junior LHP Melissa Rigos (9-9) tossed all five innings in the shortened game and allowed no hits in her ninth win of the season.
Game two was a pitchers duel from the start as Iona junior RHP Becky Riccitelli and Marist sophomore Caitlin Carpentier traded zeros through five.
Iona got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth when sophomore CF Angie Ortiz scored on senior RF Alex Sprague's single that was misplayed by the Red Fox right fielder.
Marist exploded for three runs in the bottom of the frame, the big blow coming on a two-run home run by sophomore RF Jessica Green.
Iona mounted a comeback in the top of the seventh. Sophomore 1B Val Laschen and senior 3B Alexis Garbowski recorded back-to-back two-out singles to put a runner on first and second. Senior DP Laura Bosso collected the third straight hit to drive home Laschen. Rigos, who stymied the Gaels in the opener, came on for the last out of the game, stranding the tying run on third.
Riccitelli (6-8) allowed five hits and struck out eight in six innings of word. Carpentier (7-8) scattered seven hits in 6.2 innings of work before Rigos came on for her fifth save of the year.
The Gaels return to action on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at Sacred Heart.
