WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - An 82-65 defeat at Purdue snapped a three-game winning streak for the Iona College women's basketball team, while the Boilermakers (6-4) ended a string of three losses. Thazina Cook and Anda Ivkovic each scored 18 points to lead the Gaels (8-3).
Cook also grabbed ten rebounds in her second double-double performance of the season. Brittany Rayburn had a game-high 22 points for Purdue.
Jodi Howell opened the contest with back-to-back three pointers in the first minute to give the host team a 6-0 lead. Iona trailed by ten points at the 16:30 mark. Tomica Bacic converted a three-point play to begin an 8-2 Gael run that brought the Maroon & Gold to within two with 11:08 on the clock.
Purdue scored 12 of the next 14 points to lead by 12 with 6:58 to go in the half, and was up 43-30 at the end of the period.
The Boilermakers stayed on top in the second half, with Iona only getting as close as 11 points on two straight three-point field goals by Cook and Suzi Fregosi. The Gaels forced Purdue to turn the ball over nine times in the game, while their 25 turnovers led to 35 points for the Boilermakers.
Iona held a 42-34 rebounding advantage, scoring 17 second chance points, and connected on 18-of-19 from the free throw line.
Following a two week break from competition, the Gaels will travel to the west coast to face Pacific on Dec. 28 and San Francisco on Dec. 31.
