SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Iona College women's basketball team (9-4) broke a two-game losing skid with a 68-64 win at San Francisco (4-9) in the final non-conference tilt of the regular season. Anda Ivkovic went 9-14 from the floor, including two three pointers, and was 8-10 from the free throw line to lead with a career-best 28 points.
Ivkovic was followed by Suzi Fregosi's 15 points and seven assists and Thazina Cook's 12 points. Tomica Bacic added nine points and nine rebounds for the Gaels.
For the Dons, Shay Rollins had a team-leading 18 points, followed by 15 from Necolia Simmons and 14 from Danesha Wright.
Holding San Francisco scoreless for nearly four minutes, Iona opened a 13-0 lead to start the contest, capped by a shot from beyond the arc from Fregosi at 16:35. The Dons put their first points on the board at the 16:06 mark with a layup by Simmons.
The Gaels remained in control throughout the half, leading 32-28 at the break. Following a Cook jumper in the opening minute of the second half, San Francisco scored five of the next six points to pull to within one by 17:20. The Dons tied the game at 41 when Vania Singleterry made the first of two from the line with 11:02 to go.
Iona reclaimed the lead for good with a big three-point field goal from Bacic with 8:50 remaining, from which point the Gaels played solidly to the win.
The Maroon & Gold looks to build upon it's 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record as the team moves into the heart of its league schedule. The Gaels host Manhattan at 1:00 pm on Jan. 4 in the first game of a double header with the men's squad.
