New Rochelle, NY - George Mason was able to hold the Iona College women's lacrosse team winless on the season with a 15-5 defeat at Mazzella Field. The Gaels are now 0-5 while the Patriots improved to 4-1.
Iona was faced with an early deficit as the visitors scored the game's first four goals, two by Brittany Berger and one each Laura King and Chelsea Gamble in the initial ten minutes. Senior Katie Cavanaugh drew a foul with 17:06 on the clock and gave the Gaels their first point of the day on a free position goal.
The Patriots plowed through the Iona defense to net five consecutive goals over the remainder of the first half for a 9-1 lead at intermission. The Maroon & Gold responded with a tally of their own in the second minute of the final half.
Sophomore Kasey Hughes found the back of the net against George Mason goaltender Roxie Alsruhe off a feed from Christie Godlewski. Hughes would score again six minutes later, with Jaclyn O'Leary and Kelly Hughes also adding goals in the period.
While the Gaels were outnumbered 45-17 in shots, junior goalie Colleen Magri made 20 saves to exceed the Patriots' total of eight.
Iona will travel to Florida to participate in a Spring Fling match-up against Central Connecticut. The game takes place at 5:00 pm on March 18.
