Jamaica, NY - Shooting trouble was to blame in the Iona College women's basketball team's season ending loss to St. John's in the second round of the 2008 Women's National Invitation Tournament. Both squads struggled to connect from the floor, with the Gaels' .343 shooting percentage narrowly edging the Red Storm's .339.
Freshman Anda Ivkovic was the lone Iona player to score in double figures, leading the team with 14 points. Junior Anna McLean had the most rebounds of any player with ten. St. John's' Monique McLean was the game's high scorer with 20 points.
The Red Storm opened the contest with a 15-4 run over the first seven and a half minutes, which was topped off by back-to-back threes from McLean. A basket by New Rochelle's McLean at the 12:25 mark sparked a matching 15-4 run by the Gaels to tie the game at 19-all with 6:21 left in the period.
Tiina Sten was the next to score for St. John's, and Lauren Huber followed with a jumper to tie it back up with 4:39 on the clock. Each time the hosts took a two point edge, Iona closed the gap until the end of the half saw the Red Storm up by two.
McLean knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to begin the second half as St. John's steadily increased its advantage . Trailing by 13 with 5:27 remaining, the Maroon & Gold scored 14 of the next 19 points, bookended by a Thazina Cook jumper and a Lauren DeFalco trifecta. The Gaels had pulled to within four with 1:19 to go but could not capitalize enough on their possessions to make up the difference.
Iona finishes the season at 20-14 overall, having achieved the program's second-highest wins total behind last year's 21.
