New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College women's lacrosse team (2-5) claimed its second straight win after beginning the season at 0-5, defeating Long Island 14-8 at Mazzella Field. Senior Jaclyn O'Leary scored a game-high six goals on eight shots, matching her career best.
The Gaels took a 1-0 lead on O'Leary's first score of the day off a feed from Christie Godlewski. Just 14 seconds later, the Blackbirds pulled even on a goal by Annie Kalata at the 26:02 mark. With the score tied at 1, Iona reeled off five straight tallies to take a commanding 6-1 lead with over ten minutes to play in the first half.
Long Island battled back however, and climbed to within two by scoring the next three goals. As time wound down, freshman Elizabeth Coholan launched a pass from Kelly Hughes past LIU goalie Kimberly Bostwick with eight seconds left to send the game into halftime with the Maroon & Gold ahead 7-4.
The Gaels continued to control the pace in the second half and put up a matching 7-4 goal advantage over the final 30 minutes. Joining in on the scoring action for Iona were Rachel O'Leary, Courtney Hocking, Kasey Hughes, and Katie Cavanaugh.
Bostwick played the full 60 minutes for the Blackbirds, making 14 saves in the loss. Colleen Magri picked up her second win of the season, making four saves in front of the net.
Iona will play the second of a two game homestand this week when it hosts Longwood on Friday (Mar. 28). Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
