New Rochelle, NY - Freshmen Caitlyn Collins and Elizabeth Coholan were the Gaels' leading scorers with two goals each in the Iona College women's lacrosse team's 8-7 loss to Sacred Heart in the 2008 home opener. Iona is now 0-4 this season, while the Pioneers improved to 2-2.
Collins also recorded an assist for a total of three points which was matched by Christie Godlewski, who chipped in with three assists. Amanda Williams had a game-high three goals and one assist for Sacred Heart.
Williams netted a free position shot in the first minute to open the scoring, and the Pioneers added two more to take a 3-0 lead by the 26 minute mark. The Maroon & Gold answered back with three straight goals to erase the deficit, two by the stick of Collins and one by Jaclyn O'Leary.
The Gaels scored once more in the half and outproduced Sacred Heart three goals to two over the final period, but were unable to secure the win. Coholan recorded her second goal of the day to tie the game at 7-all with 12:19 left to play. Williams responded with the game winner, firing an unassisted shot past Iona goalkeeper Colleen Magri with 7:38 on the clock.
The two squads were fairly even in shots taken, with Iona holding a slim 27-26 edge. The Gaels picked up 41 ground balls to the Pioneers' 29.
Following a week of inaction, Iona will host George Mason on March 13. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
