Easton, PA - The Iona College women's lacrosse team recorded its fourth win in five games with a 13-8 victory over Lafayette on the road. Senior Jaclyn O'Leary led the Gaels (4-6) with her second straight four goal performance. The Maroon & Gold's triumph held the Leopards (0-12) winless on the season.
Emily Archibald put Lafayette on the board early in the game, scoring off a pass from Maddy Booth with under two minutes gone by. Kelly Huges evened the score five minutes later, as the contest remained tied at 1-1 for the next 13 minutes. The Gaels pulled ahead to lead at the 9:47 mark on Christie Godlewski's first of two goals on the evening. The advantage was short lived, however, with Lafayette's Maria Drehwing tying it up again 28 seconds later.
Iona regained it's lead on an unassisted score by O'Leary with 7:28 on the clock, only to have the Leopards take over on two consecutive goals. Trailing 4-3 with 58 seconds remaining in the first half, Jillian Beck netted a pass from Lisa Baron to send the game to intermission with the score tied at 4.
Iona went on a 5-0 scoring run over the first 13 minutes of the second half to give the squad a 9-4 lead. Scoring for the Gaels during the stretch were Beck and Baron with two goals each and rookies Elizabeth Coholan and Kasey Hughes. The hosts found the back of the net twice, including once on a free position shot, to cut Iona's lead to 9-6 with 10:31 left to play.
The Gaels then put together a 4-0 run to surge to a seven goal lead at 13-6. Booth added two more goals for the Leopards in a span of 20 seconds to close out the scoring, as Iona held on for the win. Iona edged Lafayette in ground balls (28-26) and draw controls (12-10), with both teams tallying 26 shots in the contest.
Colleen Magri played the entire 60 minutes in front of the net, making eight saves to earn the win.
