New Rochelle, NY - In its first ever bid to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship tournament, the Iona College women's lacrosse team lost a close contest to No. 1 seeded Fairfield. The Stags (17-1) defeated the Gaels (7-11) 11-8 to advance to face No. 2 Marist in the final game.
Senior Christie Godlewski led the Maroon & Gold with four points, logging two goals and two assists. Kelly Hughes followed with three points on one goal and two assists while Jaclyn O'Leary had two goals in the contest. Freshmen Kasey Hughes and Elizabeth Coholan rounded out Iona's scoring with one goal apiece.
Fairfield goalkeeper Lauren Chatnik was a force in front of the net, making 13 saves and allowing the Gaels only one free position goal on seven attempts. Colleen Magri made seven saves for Iona, all in the first half. Despite the loss, the Gaels bested the Stags 12-9 in draw controls, 25-20 in ground balls, and 11-16 in turnovers.
