Fairfield, CT - The Iona College women's lacrosse team fell to 0-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action after a 20-10 defeat at Fairfield. The win was the tenth straight for the Stags.
Senior tri-captain Jaclyn O'Leary had a team best five points for the Gaels, recording four goals on six shots and adding one assist. She was followed by Kelly Hughes who had two goals on the day.
Fairfield took an early 2-0 lead as Rebecca White scored her first of three goals just 24 seconds into the game and Cristin Lucena added another nine seconds later. Katie Cavanaugh scored the stopper for Iona at the 28:25 mark, finding the back of the net on a free position shot to put her team on the scoreboard. Huges and O'Leary were the only other Iona players to get past Fairfield goalkeeper Lauren Chatnik in the half, with the Gaels being outscored 11-5 from that point en route to a 13-6 halftime deficit.
The teams exchanged goals in the early minutes of the second half, but Iona would get no closer than the seven-goal margin. Fairfield put the game out of reach with a 5-1 run, taking the largest lead of the game at 20-9 with 2:05 left to play.
Netminders Colleen Magri and Carlee Street split time in front of the net, combining for seven saves over the 60 minutes. Fourth-year Gaels Christie Godlewski and Rachel O'Leary were strong on defense for Iona. Godlewski picked up six draw controls and two ground balls in addition to her one goal on the afternoon. O'Leary caused four Fairfield turnovers, had two ground balls, and scored once.
The Maroon & Gold will return home to Mazzella Field to host Manhattan on April 9. The two teams will face off at 3:00 pm.
