NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Leading by one with two minutes left to play, the Iona College lacrosse team gave up two goals and fell behind, 12-11, against Quinnipiac in non-conference action at Mazzella Field. The Gaels are now 1-4 to start the season, while the Bobcats improved to 3-1.
Quinnipiac scored the first goal of the day less than three minutes into the first half, but Iona quickly responded to tie the score on an
Elizabeth Coholan goal at the 26:19 mark. The Bobcats then reclaimed a 3-2 lead before the Gaels recorded four of the last five goals of the half to hold a 5-3 edge at the break.
The Maroon & Gold led for the majority of the second half, holding a three-goal advantage on three separate occasions. With the Gaels in front 10-9 following Coholan's fifth tally of the afternoon, Lyndsey Banach found the back of the net from free position to knot the score at 10-all.
Kerry Thompson recorded her second goal of the year on an unassisted shot with 2:15 left on the clock to give Iona an 11-10 lead, but the Bobcats matched with 1:38 to go. Tied at 11 with just seconds remaining in regulation, Quinnipiac's Tiffany Manzi scored the game-winner for the visitors with a free position goal with six seconds left.
Coholan (five goals, one assist) and Godlewski (three goals, three assists) led the Gaels with six points each. Iona bested Quinnipiac 21-19 in shots on goal, 17-12 in ground balls, and 14-10 in draw controls. Goalkeepers
