POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Unable to make up enough ground after falling behind, the Iona College lacrosse team lost an 11-7 battle in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on the road. With the loss, Iona is now 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Coholan led the Gael attack with three goals on five shots, and also recorded two ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Freshman
Casey Scully notched a pair of goals while
Kasey Hughes and
Kerry Thompson each had one. Picking up assists for the Maroon & Gold were seniors
Christie Godlewski and
Lisa Baron, who finished with two.
Marist jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Iona broke onto the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Hughes at the 11:23 mark. Following a Red Fox tally, the Gaels scored back-to-back goals to make the score 5-3. With 40 seconds left in the first half, Coholan found the back of the net off a pass from Baron to send the game into halftime with Marist ahead 7-4.
The Red Foxes narrowly edged the Gaels 4-3 over the second period as Coholan scored two unassisted goals and Scully netted a free position shot during the final 30 minutes.
Senior netminder
Colleen Magri played the entire game in goal for Iona, making 16 saves.
The Gaels continue their four-game road set against local rival Manhattan on Apr. 1. The first draw is set for 7:00 pm.
