FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 decision to Sacred Heart. Senior Christie Godlewski led the Gaels with four goals, while sophomore Elizabeth Coholan had four points on three goals and an assist.
The Pioneers and scored the first four goals of the game, including the first, which game 45 seconds into the contest. Godlewski's initial goal of the game stopped the Sacred Heart attack as Iona was on its way to scoring three consecutive goals of its own. Coholan added her first two goals of the game during the time frame as well. Sacred Heart scored three of the period's final four goals and headed into halftime leading 7-4.
Sacred Heart's Amanda Williams got the second half scoring started with an unassisted goal. Senior Jillian Beck and Godlewski tallied scores for the Gaels to cut the Pioneer lead to two. Williams added her fifth goal of the game to extend the lead for Sacred Heart. With neither team scoring for close to five minutes, Godlewski added two goals to her stellar day by finding the net twice in the span of 90 seconds, putting the Gaels behind by just one. After Williams scored what proved to be the golden goal, freshman Casey Scully scored her seventh goal of the season for the Maroon & Gold.
For the second consecutive game, Iona used two players in goals as Colleen Magri recorded four saves and Carlee Street made seven stops. The defensive end was also headed by the efforts of sophomore Stephanie Sumcizk, who two ground balls and caused four turnovers. Senior Lisa Baron had three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Gaels.
Iona returns to Mazzella Field this Saturday to host Boston College. The game will start at 1:00 pm.
