NIAGARA UNIV., NY - With nine different goal-scorers and ten total players recording at least one point, the Iona College lacrosse team defeated the Purple Eagles, 13-7, at Niagara Field. The victory ended a four-game drought for the Gaels and marked the team's first conference win of the season.
Coming back from a 2-0 hole, the Maroon & Gold used a 9-1 scoring run to lead 9-3 at halftime. Sophomore Caitlyn Collins got things started for Iona with back-to-back tallies, followed by free position goals by Elizabeth Coholan and Lisa Baron before the Purple Eagles answered back.
Iona's six-goal lead at the end of the first period proved to be a helpful advantage as both teams scored four times in the bottom half. Collins and Christie Godlewski each had three points for the Gaels with Collins recording a hat trick and Godlewski pitching in with one goal and two assists.
Jillian Beck, Casey Scully, Kasey Hughes, Courtney Hocking, and Kerry Thompson also had goals in the win. Netminder Colleen Magri, who has started all 13 contests, picked up her third win of the season and had six saves in the first half. Carlee Street came on in relief to start the second half and made five saves.
The Gaels take on non-conference opponent Bryant at 3:00 pm on Apr. 14 in New Rochelle.
