STORRS, CT - The Iona College lacrosse team opened its 2010 season at Connecticut, falling to the Huskies by a score of 17-7. Sophomore midfielder
Casey Scully led the Gaels with three points in the loss with seven different players reaching the scoring column for Iona.
After UConn registered the first goal of the afternoon, Iona scored back-to-back goals to lead 2-1 just over nine minutes into the contest.
Alexa Darling scored off a feed from
Courtney Hocking to put the Gaels on the scoreboard and
Elizabeth Coholan followed with a goal from free position to put the Maroon & Gold ahead by one.
Thirty seconds later, Connecticut began a 6-0 run which spanned 15 minutes of action to pull out to a 7-3 advantage. Iona stopped the tear with less than four minutes remaining in the first half as
Emily Taddei found the back of the net on a free position shot. Scully added an unassisted goal as Iona scored two of the half's final four goals to trail 9-4 at the break.
The Huskies continued to show their strength, recording the first five tallies of the second half. Hocking added another one for Iona with 14:51 to go, and both teams traded goals over the the remainder.
Brittney Mabus and
Caitlyn Collins both earned their first goals of the year in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper
Carlee Street made five saves in front of the net. The Gaels will try again for their first win in the home opener against Sacred Heart on Mar. 3.
