FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona College lacrosse team continued its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule with a contest against league rival Fairfield this afternoon. The Gaels lost an 18-11 decision at Lessing Field, dropping to 4-9 on the year and 1-2 in MAAC play. The Stags improved to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the MAAC.
Casey Scully led the Iona offensive attack with four points, with two goals and two assists. Amber Zimmerlink, Elizabeth Coholan and Kylie Gregory all scored twice in the game for Iona. The Maroon & Gold led 17-13 in draw controls over the contest.
The Stags scored the first three goals of the game, as Reardon put two in the net and Coleman the third. Emily Taddei scored the Gaels first goal, 10:05 into the half, temporarily putting a stop to the Stags run. Katie MacKay netted her first goal of the game 51 seconds later, starting a 5-0 Fairfield run, which gave the Stags a 8-1 lead with 5:55 remaining in the half.
Iona scored the final two goals of the first-half, to make the score 8-3 at the intermission. The Gaels would then net the first two tallies of the second period, to climb within two goals, 8-5, with 27:22 to play. Amanda Best, who scored twice on the afternoon, snapped the Gaels run with a free position goal at 25:25. It would be the first of a 7-2 Fairfield run, which was capped off by another Best goal with 11:46 to play, and the Stags leading 15-7.
Katie Keenan earned the win in net for the Stags, making seven saves in her 56:14 of action, allowing 10 goals. Kelley Brady minded the net for the final 3:46 of the game, making a save and allowing one goal. Carlee Street played the entire game in net for Iona, making nine saves in taking the loss.
Iona will close out the regular season with a three-game home series at Mazzella Field. The Gaels begin the set hosting Marist at 12:00 pm on Sunday (Apr. 18).
