NEW ROCHELLE, NY - In a game that featured six tied scores, the Iona College lacrosse team ended up one goal short in a 13-12 loss to Canisius in MAAC action at Mazzella Field. Senior
Kasey Hughes led Iona in points with five on three goals and two assists, while
Caitlyn Collins topped the Maroon & Gold in goals with four.
The Gaels led twice in the opening six minutes, taking 1-0 and 2-1 leads on tallies by Hughes and Kasey Scully. The Golden Griffins then strung together four in a row to pull ahead 5-2 at 12:57. Hughes and Scully each picked up their second goals of the day while Collins added another as Iona registered three of the final four goals of the half to close to within one at the break.
Stephanie Sumcizk fielded the draw to begin the second half and found teammate
Elizabeth Coholan, who put the ball in the back of the net to knot the score at six in the 31st minute. With the game tied twice more in the following minutes (7-7, 8-8), Iona continued to create opportunities to score and held a two-goal advantage on two occasions, leading 10-8 and 11-9.
Canisius's Ashley Curtis and Megan Oosting went back-to-back for the Griffs over a span of 49 seconds to even things up at 11-all with 7:09 left to play. Iona moved in front once again on Hughes' third goal of the afternoon, but Canisius was not far behind to tie at 12-12. The final goal came on a free position shot by Oosting as Canisius banked the game-winner in the 57th minute.
Iona led 25-17 in shots on goal, 22-7 in ground balls, and 15-12 in draw controls while forcing 18 Canisius turnovers. Goalkeeper
Carlee Street made four saves in the net while Allison Daley saved 13 for the Golden Griffins.
The Gaels will play their final game of the regular season on Sunday (Apr. 25). Iona hosts Niagara at noon on Senior Day.
