Temple Tops Iona, 5-4

AMBLER, PA - The Iona College baseball team pounded out 14 hits but could not hold off Temple in the late innings in a 5-4 defeat at Skip Wilson Field. The Owls (8-5) scored all five of their runs in the final three frames to snap the Gaels' (5-7) five-game winning streak.

Junior 3B Chris Burke went 3-for-4 with a walk in the contest. He recorded a double, scored a run and drove in another. Junior DH James Beck, 1B Michael Chiaravalloti, sophomore C Sean Menickella and freshman RF Joe Smith each had two hits. Smith doubled, stole a base and drove in two runs. Senior 2B Nick Rossetti accounted for the Gaels fourth run batted in.

Sophomore RHP Thomas Kriss allowed six hits over 6.1 innings with three runs and three strikeouts in a no decision. He was relieved by sophomore RHP Matt Marley who allowed a run on three hits with two strikeouts in an inning and two-thirds. Junior Anthony Castellitto took the loss in the ninth.

The Gaels will take on Stony Brook in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday (Mar. 16) on Long Island.
