BUFFALO, NY - The Iona College lacrosse team's two-game winning streak was snapped by a 13-8 loss to Canisius on the road. The Gaels are now 2-1 in MAAC play and 4-8 overall while the Golden Griffins improved to 2-0 in the league (8-3 overall).
Kylie Gregory led Iona with four goals on seven shots and had one draw control.
Elizabeth Coholan and
Nina Veneziale tacked on two goals apiece while
Amber Zimmerlink paced the squad with three ground balls.
Canisius grabbed a 2-0 lead to start with a pair of goals 32 seconds apart from Brianne Laffey and Taylor Gray. The Gaels cut it to 2-1 on Gregory's first goal of the day off a feed from Coholan, but the Griffs stayed in front through the entire game. Trailing 13-3 midway through the second half, Iona scored five unanswered goals over the closing 10:45 to pull to within five for the 13-8 final.
Canisius's Kate Gosson matched Gregory with a game-leading four tallies, supported by three from Megan Oosting, two from Gray, and one each from Laffey, Theresa Walton, Carly Quinn, and Rachel Brand. Iona's
Maria Ortiz made six saves in the loss while Allison Daley and Gina Molfetta combined for eight saves for the Griffs.
The Maroon & Gold will take a break from MAAC action to face non-conference opponent Lehigh on April 6.
