DURHAM, NH - The Iona College lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 16-0 defeat to New Hampshire on Wednesday afternoon.
The shutout was the first in program history, as the Wildcats stymied the Gael offense allowing just three shots on target. UNH scored eight goals in both periods, forcing Iona to split the cage. Junior Maria Ortiz made nine saves on 20 shots. Sophomore Blaire Nathanson played the final 13 minutes allowing five goals on seven shots.
UNH was led by Nicole Grote with seven points on the afternoon, scoring three times and adding four assists. Laura Pucci scored four goals and Jenny Simpson contributed with a hat trick. Kathleen O'Keefe was credited with the win.
Iona will return to action on Saturday, when they meet the reigning MAAC champions Canisius at 2 p.m
