NEWROCHELLE, NY – In a must-win game, the Iona College lacrosse team faltered to Siena 12-10 on Senior Day at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon to complete the 2013 season.
Prior to the game, head coach Michelle Mason honored her four graduating seniors – Kylie Gregory, Lauren Henwood, Nancy Ibrahim, and Brittney Mabus.
Junior Nina Veneziale finished with a team-high four points, scoring all four times. Freshman Mary Kate McCormick had three points with two goal and one assists. Sophomore Meghan Testoni scored twice, classmate Casey Palmer and junior Angela Grous each scored once.
Sophomore Blaire Nathanson and junior Maria Ortiz split time in goal today, with Ortiz making five saves in the second half.
Siena took an early 3-0 lead before Testoni scored her first with 23:48 left in the first. The visitors held a 7-3 advantage until Iona finished off the half on a 3-1 run, scoring three goals in 55 seconds.
Trailing 8-6 at the half, Siena held an 11-8 edge in shots. Both sides scored four times in the second half, as Siena used a four corners offense late in the contest to secure the win.
Neither team scored in the final 11:52 of regulation, but Iona had many chances to even the score. McCormick had a pair of chances late in the game, but the Siena defense didn't allow Iona any second chance opportunities.
Lauren Smith had five goals for the Saints and Sarah Croutier added three Ashley Holdridge made seven saves.
With the loss, Iona is eliminated from MAAC Tournament content and finishes the 2013 season with a record of 4-12 and 2-4 in MAAC play. The team will return 21 players next year, including eight returning as seniors.
