The Iona College lacrosse team dropped a 12-3 decision to the University of New Hampshire Monday afternoon in non-conference action at Mazzella Field. After a 3-0 run by the Gaels to start the game, Iona was held scoreless for the final 57:29 minutes of play as the visiting Wildcats racked up 12 straight tallies.
Iona got its first goal of the game forty seconds into the contest on a free position goal by freshman Erin Pugh, her fifth of the season. Sophomore Mary Kate McCormick followed just over two minutes later with her fourth of the year before Bernadette Gennaro scored less than a minute later on the free position for her fourth tally of the season.
The Wildcats regrouped and scored the final four goals of the half, to take a 4-3 advantage in the half. UNH then outscored Iona 8-0 in the second half for the nine goal final margin. Laura Puccia led New Hampshire with six points on four goals and two assists while Laura McHoul had two goals and four assists. Overall, four Wildcats registered multi-point efforts.
In net, senior Maria Ortiz made 12 stops, while UNH netminder Taylor Hurwitz tallied seven saves. Overall, New Hampshire held a 28-13 advantage in shots, and a 21-9 edge in ground balls.
The Gaels are back in action Mar. 16, when they travel to Cinncinnati for a non-conference tilt.
