POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Iona College women's lacrosse team fell in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action to Marist 17-6 Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium. Junior Meghan Testoni and freshman Erin Pugh scored a team high two goals apiece for the Gaels in the contest.
Early on the two teams traded goals, as junior Casey Palmer's tally with 18:43 left in the first period tied the game at three. From there, the Red Foxes went on a 5-0 run, taking an 8-3 run on Emily Leonard's third goal of the game with 9:23 left in the first. Back-to-back Iona goals trimmed the deficit to three, 8-5, before a Marist goal with two minutes remaining gave the Red Foxes a 9-5 left at half.
Marist extended their lead to seven, 12-5, with the first three goals of the second half. Pugh's second goal of the game with 22:53 left stopped the Marist run, cutting the Marist to six, 12-6, before the Red Foxes ended the contest with five unanswered tallies.
The Gaels were outshot in the contest 33-26, while the Red Foxes held a 27-12 advantage in ground balls. In net, sophomore Thea Leitman made six saves while senior Maria Ortiz made four saves in a relief effort.
The Maroon & Gold is back in action Wednesday, when they travel to Quinnipiac for a 3:00 pm start.
