NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Former Iona College men's basketball student-athletes David Laury (2012-15), Scott Machado (2008-12), and Ra'shad James (2010-12) are looking to catch the eye of an NBA team in the upcoming 2015 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. The summer showcase is where NBA teams compete against each other using different summer rosters from its regular season lineups to season newly drafted rookies and give undrafted players a chance to prove themselves. In addition to the Las Vegas location, Orlando and Utah also hosted summer leagues.
Laury will play for the Philadelphia 76ers squad. As a senior for the Gaels this past year he averaged 19.8 points per game, and 9.7 rebounds per game in 34 games. He earned the MAAC Player of the Year award and was a finalist for the Karl Malone Award given to the nation's top power forward.
The Sixers begin play in Las Vegas Saturday (Jul. 11) at 8:30 pm ET against the Los Angeles Lakers. Game two is Sunday (Jul. 12) at 10:30 pm ET vs. the Boston Celtics. After a day off the team completes Summer League play Tuesday (Jul. 14) vs. the Boston Celtics at 5:30 pm ET. All three games take place at the Thomas and Mack Center. Laury is joined on the Sixers by former Duke star and 2015 No. 3 overall draft pick Jahlil Okafor, former Ohio State star Sam Thompson, and Syracuse star Jerami Grant.
Machado is also in Las Vegas with the Washington Wizards. Machado spent the 2014-15 season in Estonia playing for Kalev/Cramo of the Korvpalli Meistriliiga. In 19 games, he averaged 11.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. He has previously spent time in the NBA for the Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz, and Golden State Warriors and played in the D-League with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Santa Cruz Warriors.
The Wizards take on the Phoenix Suns Saturday at 6:00 pm ET and the NBA D-League Select squad Sunday at 4:00 pm at Cox Pavilion. The three-game series concludes Tuesday vs. the Mavericks at the Thomas and Mack Center at 3:30 pm. Machado teams with past Kansas standout Kelly Oubre Jr. as well as former Maryland Terrapin Dez Wells on the Wizards' squad.
James laces up for the Portland Trail Blazers in Las Vegas. James played for the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Developmental League last season. He appeared in 46 games with the Bighorns, earning 43 starts. James averaged 20.8 ppg, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists playing in the unique offense of Reno which averaged 133.1 points per game good for best in the league.
Portland begins play Saturday vs. the Celtics at 8:00 pm ET. Game two vs. the Mavericks is slated for Sunday at 10:00 pm ET. On Tuesday, the squad finishes up with the Spurs at 3:00 pm ET. All three Portland games are at Cox Pavilion. Joining James with the Trail Blazers are former Baylor guard Kenny Cherry and Notre Dame sharp shooter Pat Connaughton.
