Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY— The Iona College Lacrosse team bounces back from road loss by picking up a 13-10 win over Sacred Heart this afternoon at Mazzella field.
The Gaels were led by sophomore Jenna Tolzmann, who netted four goals, and senior Mary Kate McCormick, who continues to be the catalyst for the Gaels offensive attack; the reigning MAAC Player of the Week finished with five assists to go with her one goal.
Junior Erin Pugh put up another three goal performance, joining her in the hat trick parade was fellow junior Katelyn Noschese. Freshmen Christine Gironda and Libby Miller notched a goal each; both rookies have scored in every game thus far in their college careers.
The Maroon & Gold continued the trend of hots starts, jumping out of the gate early with goals by Noschese and Tolzmann coming within the first 1:30 of the game. The Pioneers would then get on the board shortly after.
The Gaels added a pair of two-nil runs coming in between another Sacred Heart goal to go up 6-2. Sacred Heart then went on score three straight in the middle of the first half to make it 6-5. But the Gaels quelled the Pioneers run, going on a 2-0 run in the final seven minutes of the first half.
Iona entered the halftime break with an three goal advantage, 8-5.
The Maroon & Gold continued their offense run at the start of the second half, adding two more tallies coming from Noschese and Pugh to go up 10-5.
Over the final thirty minutes, the Gaels dominated the action, at one point expanding their advantage on the scoreboard to 13 - 7. Sacred Heart would respond with a three goal run in closing moments of the game, their attempt to comeback but fell short.
The Maroon & Gold held the advantage in shots 22-19, also secured more ground balls 21-17. The turnover battle fell in favor for Iona, 14 to 18, and draw controls also saw the victor on top, 13 to 11.
Iona will travel to Pennsylvania to take on Lafayette on Tuesday, Mar. 1. The month of March features six road games for the Gaels.
