Box Score NEW ROCHELLE, NY-- The Iona College lacrosse team was defeated by Canisius 16-3 in the last home contest of the 2016 season. The first place Golden Griffs used their potent offense and stingent defense to overcome the Gaels.
Before the game, Iona's five seniors were honored for their efforts with the program; defenders Hannah Fasano, Michelle Whitham, Amanda Desmond, goalkeeper Thea Leitman and attacker Mary Kate McCormick were all recognized in the ceremony.
Iona's three goals on the afternoon were all netted by sophomore Pamela Giordano, for her second straight three goal performance; she scored once in the first half and twice in the second half. McCormick had the assist on Giordano's first goal, for her 199th career point to solidy second place on Iona's all time point's list.
Canisius dominated both sides of the ball holding the Gaels to their lowest points total of the year. Erica Evans led the Golden Griffs with six goals and Rebecca VanLaeken recorded 11 saves behind the net.
The Golden Griffs out shot the Gaels (30-20), secured more ground balls (22-15) and turnover margin (9-12). Both teams split draw controls (10-10).
