PROVIDENCE, RI – The Iona College men's and women's swimming and diving team traveled to Providence College Friday afternoon and came away with a pair of wins, as well as nine new school records.
Â
Swimming at the Friar's 25-meter pool, as opposed to the traditional NCAA 25-yard course, the Gael men handled the Big East program 167-113. The Maroon & Gold took 11 of the 16 events in the contest. The Iona women posted a dramatic, 156-132 win, roaring back with five consecutive wins after trailing by 11 points following the one-meter diving event.

Sophomore
Jackson Madonia made the biggest mark on the men's side, winning the 200-meter breaststroke and individual medley races, setting new school marks of 2:24.71 and 2:10.47. The breaststroke clocking lowered the 2010 mark held by Iona's MAAC Champion Chris Yacobacci; Madonia's IM time lowered classmate
Aidan Holbrook's mark of 2:10.99 set at Fairfield in January of last season. Junior
Spencer Moran led off the evening by winning the 200-medley relay with a record of 27.48 for his portion of the 50-meter backstroke leg and also took the 100 and 200-meter backstroke races with respective times of 58.72 and 2:08.45.
Â
Other winners on the men's side included senior Matthew Anderson in the 800-meter freestyle at 8:39.20;
Daniel Hadary in the 200M Free and 400M Free at 1:57.40 and 4:11.47, respectively; Holbrook in the 100-freestyle at 53.53 and

Â
Freshman
Meghan Pattison had the best day of her first season, setting a pair of new team records taking in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke at 1:05.81 and 2:25.58. Classmate
Grace Curry re-wrote the record books in the backstroke events with a new leadoff mark in the 50-backstroke in the medley relay at 31.13. Fellow rookie
Taylor Spillman took the 200-butterfly for the second week in a row, with a new team record of 2:25.40.
Â
Not to be outdone, senior
Alyssa Chain lowered her own mark in the 100-meter butterfly by two seconds, winning the event at 1:05.54. Junior Isabella Pabon did the same in the 200-IM, finishing in 2:25.40.
Â
Other winners on the women's side included freshman
Isabella Nicholson in the 200-freestyle and 400-freestyle with respective times of 2:10.12 and 4:36.13. Classmate

Â
"Both Coach Dorsey and I were really pleased the way our team responded today," head coach
Nick Cavataro said. "After a heavy practice week, to travel to Rhode Island for the second time in a week; swimming in short course meter pool, which we rarely get to do, we couldn't have asked for better results."
Â
The Gaels return to action next Friday at the Hynes Pool, for their first MAAC meet, welcoming Monmouth at 4:00 p.m.
