LOS ANGELES, LA – The Los Angeles Lakers have signed guard Scott Machado '12 to a 10-day contract. The Iona College men's basketball alum is making his second stint in the National Basketball Association.
As of Thursday, Mar. 21, Machado ranks second in the NBA G League averaging 8.0 assists per game for the South Bay Lakers. He also contributes 16.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 rebounds per contest.
This past week Machado was named the NBA G League Player of the Week averaging 22.3 points, 13.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 steals in four games. The South Bay Lakers won all four games. Most notably, Machado scored a career-high 40 points on 14-for-22 shooting with 16 assists, seven rebounds and three steals in a win at Wisconsin on Monday, Mar. 11.
Machado is in his second season with South Bay after previously spending time playing for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (Houston Rockets affiliate), Santa Cruz Warriors (Golden State Warriors) and Salt Lake City Stars (Utah Jazz).
Machado's first appearance in the NBA was during the 2012-13 season for the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors. He appeared in six games for the Rockets, playing 3.5 minutes per game.
The 28-year-old is the sixth player in Iona College men's basketball history to appear in the NBA or ABA. His is the first player to make the league undrafted. Previous Gaels to appear in the NBA or ABA include Bob Santini ('53), Richie Guerin ('54),
Jeff Ruland ('80),
Steve Burtt ('84), and Sean Green ('91).
The Lakers' next game is on Friday, Mar. 22 at the Staples Center against the Brooklyn Nets at 10:30 pm ET.
