Juan Alfaro Monge of Iona MSOC Named MAAC Defensive Player of the Week

EDISON, NJ - Iona men's soccer freshman goalkeeper Juan Alfaro Monge has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. In his first career start on Saturday night, Alfaro Monge made five saves en route to a shutout win over Columbia at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium.

Alfaro Monge made a pair of early saves on breakaway chances for the Lions. After Iona's goal, Alfaro Monge remained sharp in net and held Columbia off the scoresheet. The Heredia, Costa Rica native is Iona's first MAAC Defensive Player of the Week since Juan Alcantara earned the honor in October of 2017.

Iona returns to action and opens up league play on Wednesday, September 29 at Manhattan. The Gaels and the Jaspers kick off at 3:00 p.m. from Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York.
