LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – A quartet of Iona University women's cross country runners earning All-MAAC honors was not enough for the Gaels to extend their conference streak at the 2022 MAAC Championship at The Crossings of Colonie. The Maroon & Gold finished third as a team missing the top honor for the first time in seven seasons. Freshman
Tayla Gunton was Iona's top performer with a sixth-place finish, crossing the 6k line in 21:39.3.
RACE SUMMARY
Following a pair of Siena runners and three from Quinnipiac, Gunton was the team's first finisher in her second cross country race with the Gaels. Other All-MAAC honorees included junior
Gabrielle Toth in 11th place (21:51.8), sophomore
Madison Klein in 12th (21:52.4) and rookie
Cara Du Preez in 14
th place (22:18.2). Junior
Maya Richardson (22th, 22:34.5) was the Gaels' final scorer.
TOP ROOKIES
In addition to All-MAAC honors, both Gunton and Du Preez were named to the All-Rookie Team.
TEAM RESULTS
With 65 team points, the Gaels finished behind Quinnipiac (26) and Siena (46). Marist (131) and Rider (144) rounded out the Top 5. Iona won 16 of the last 18 MAAC Championships, with Quinnipiac swooping in this season and in 2015.
