NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's soccer team earned a come from behind victory over the Manhattan Japsers, taking the win, 2-1. Prior to today's match the Gaels celebrated it's five seniors,
Edu Calvo-Salinas,
Kendell Thomas,
Federico Russo,
Alessio Hernandez, and
Matias Morales.Â
MATCH SUMMARY
Manhattan capitalized in the first 12 minutes of the match, earning a penalty kick, Henry Hamilton buried it for a goal giving the Jaspers a one to nothing lead. Six minutes later
Frederik Johnson Oee and Calvo-Salinas had back to back opportunities to tie it up but just missed.Â
In the 33rd minute the Gaels found the back the net to knot things back up 1-1. Sophomore
Nathaniel David notched his first goal in the Maroon & Gold,
Camil Azzam Ruiz and
Elird Mero assisted on the score. Both teams had a couple more chances in the final minutes of the first half but nothing to show.Â
Second half opened with a couple chances for the Gaels but it took 15 minutes in the first half for the Maroon & Gold to find the twine, this time it was senior
Federico Russo notching his first goal of the season.
Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez assisted on the goal for his second assist and sixth point in his freshman year. Calvo-Salinas had an opportunity in the last 10 minutes to take a commanding 3-1 lead but the Spain Native just missed the the right side. Â
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Nathaniel David's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
- Alfaro Monge made four of his five saves in the first half, matching a season-high save total in the victory just like he did in the gaem against Marist this year.Â
- Gonzalez Fernandez assist on the game-winning goal. It was his sixth point of the season tying Azzam Ruiz for the team lead.
- Russo's game-winning goal was the first of the season for the senior.Â
- Iona remains unbeaten in conference play.Â
- The Gaels remain unbeaten at home this season, improving to 3-0-2Â with today's win over the Jaspers.
- The Maroon & Gold improved to 14-9-3 all-time against Manhattan, this is the first win over Manhattan since the 2019 season.
