NEW YORK, NY - The Iona University men's indoor track & field program earned three medals and advanced six qualifiers in seven events on Day 1 of the 2023 MAAC Championships at the Armory Track & Field Center. Senior
Jamie Dee earned a gold medal in the 5,000-meter run to highlight the Maroon & Gold competitors Saturday night. Silver medals were awarded to senior
Graham Baird in the 5k and the Distance Medley Relay quartet.
5,000-METER RUN
Dee lowered his own MAAC record and personal best indoor 5k time with a time of 13:56.92. It is the 12th fastest time in school history as he became the 12th Iona runner to earn a sub-14-minute 5,000-meter time. He repeated as MAAC Champion after setting the meet standard in 2022 with a 14:02.30. Senior
Graham Baird earned silver, posting a time of 14:25.19 and finishing more than six seconds ahead of the bronze medalist. Freshman
Scott Fagan (11th, 14:56.10), sophomore
Matt Penna (13th, 15:11.86) and junior
Peter Schulten (15th, 15:17.43) also competed in the event for the Maroon & Gold.
DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY
Iona's quartet of
Nick Sinofsky (1200m),
John Conroy (400m),
Nick Hunziker (800m) and
Matt Rankin (1600m) earned a silver medal in the men's DMR event. Their time of 10:03.93 was sandwiched in between gold medalist Siena and bronze medalist Rider.
200-METER PRELIMINARIES
Junior
Jadyn Tabois was the top qualifier in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 21.50. It was the fastest qualifying time among the 28 competitors in the event. He won his heat by more than as second and held a .32 second advantage over the No. 2 qualifier from Rider. It lowered his own school record in the event.
800-METER PRELIMINARIES
In his MAAC Championship debut, freshman
Aiden Coles ran the fastest time in the 800-meter preliminary heats, posting a 1:53.21. It was a personal best time and a Top 20 time in program history. Junior
Nick Soldevere finished second by three one-hundredths of a second in the opening heat and earned a bid into tomorrow's final with his time of 1:55.02. Sophomore
Donnovan Tucker (16th, 1:59.83), freshman
Peter Fogarty (21st, 2:01.89) and sophomore
Daniel Shephard (22nd, 2:02.58) also competed for the Gaels.
MILE PRELIMINARIES
Sophomore
Damien Dilcher was the third Gael to earn the top qualifying time, posting a 4:12.80 in the mile. Junior
Jonathan DeSouza also qualified with his time of 4:18.11. He finished third in his heat with the 10th fastest time among the 25 competitors. Hunziker (13th, 4:22.18) and Sinofsky (17th, 4:25.44) pulled double duty in the mile prior to competing in the DMR.
60-METER PRELIMINARIES
The Gaels will have two representatives in tomorrow's 60-meter final as sophomore
Jordan Providence and Tabois qualified with their performances Saturday night. Providence ran the fifth fastest time (6.92) while Tabois was seventh (6.95). Tabois matched his personal best time. Gaels' sophomore
Jeremy Scott was 10th in 7.03.
