STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Iona University women's indoor track and field team competed at the 2023 New York Metropolitan Championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex Friday. Junior Gabrielle Toth earned a MET Championship in the 800-meter event while junior Grace Sparrow (800) and sophomore Cosmina Spiridon (mile) earned second-place finishes, highlighting 10 top 10 finishes for the Maroon & Gold.

800-METER RUN

Toth narrowly earned the win in the 800-meter event, posting a time of 2:14.07. It was just .36 ahead of her teammate Sparrow. The duo was more than two seconds faster than the third placed finisher from Columbia. Sophomore Katie Menard finished fifth overall in 2:19.04. Toth's time was a five-second personal best in the indoor 800 and fastest of the season for the Maroon & Gold. Sparrow ran her second fastest indoor 800 time while Menard set a new personal standard.

MILE-RUN

Spiridon's second place time in the mile was 5:06.98. Sophomore Madison Klein came in fourth (5:09.41) and junior Susie O'Flynn was ninth (5:17.28). Klein ran an indoor personal best time, nearly four seconds faster than her time at the Lions Indoor Invitational in January 2022. Spiridon and O'Flynn ran their first indoor mile for the Gaels.

1,000-METER RUN

Junior Maya Richardson picked up a fourth place finish in the 1,000-meter event, running a 3:04.23.

60-METER DASH

Sophomore Kedarjah Lewis placed fifth in the preliminary heats (7.75) and sixth in the final (7.78) in the 60-meter dash. The 7.75 time was .02 off her own school record set at last year's MAAC Championship.

500-METER RUN

Sophomore Megan Sterbenz came in eighth in the 500-meter run (1:23.60).

LONG JUMP

Lewis was the lone Gael in multiple events, and finished eighth in the long jump with a best leap of 4.98m.

TEAM FINISH

As a team, Iona was sixth overall with 13 runners competing in eight events.
