Iona Golf In Top 3 After Second Round of MAAC Championship

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL - After the first two rounds of the 2023 MAAC Championship the Iona Gaels are currently in third place and are only three strokes behind the leaders Siena College. Iona led after the first round going four under as a team but found some struggles to start the second round as they finished six over today. 

The MAAC championship is held in Lake Buena Vista, FL at the Disney complex, the course is the Disney's Palm Golf course sitting at 6716 yards for a par 72. The other MAAC schools include; Siena, Fairfield, Rider, Manhattan, Niagara, Canisius, St. Peter's, and Mount St. Mary's.   

Gonzalo was the top finisher after two rounds for the Maroon & Gold, in round one the spain native carded a two under (70) with three birdies and only one bogey on friday, today she dropped on stroke shooting a one-over (73). He started the second round with a birdie but couldn't find another one on the day, entering the final round tomorrow he is tied for 4th. 

Parker Smith was the next top finisher for the Gaels, he currently sits tied for 7th. In the opening round the Kentucky native posted a two-under (70), He carded five birdies in round one with four of them coming on the front nine. In round two he posted a two-over (74), he also birdied the opening hole of round two and found three more birdies over the final five holes.  

Freshman Connor Henderson was the third Gael to finish inside the top ten after round two. The Oregon native turned in an even par 72 in his opening round with four birdies and four bogeys on the card. After struggling on the front nine of his second round, Henderson settled in on the back nine, the rookie carded four birds with three straight on holes 13, 14, & 15.  

Both Fletcher Wunderlich and William Fleck are currently tied for 28th place after both being eight-over after two rounds. Wunderlich shot even par in the first round, Fleck shot six-over in the first round then bounced back today with a two-over 74. 

The championship continues tomorrow with the final round. Iona trails the leaders Siena by three strokes and Arcelay trails the individual leader from Fairfield by 10 strokes.
