Petra Oborilova To Represent Slovakia at World University Games in China

CHENGDU, CHINA - Iona University women's basketball rising sophomore Petra Oborilova has been selected to compete for her native Slovakia at the 2023 World University Games sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Women's basketball pool play begins tomorrow (Friday, July 28) and runs through August 4. The semifinal and medal dates are slated for August 5-6. Sixteen countries will vie for a gold medal in the sport.

Oborilova appeared in 22 games as a rookie in 2022-23 averaging 8.5 minutes, 1.4 points and 0.9 rebounds per game. She scored season-high five points twice, vs. Siena on February 16, and vs. Canisius less than two weeks later. A notable performance for Oborilova came in the waning moments of the Gaels record breaking performance vs. Rider on January 19, 2023. Late in the fourth quarter, she drained the Gaels' 16th three-pointer of the game and her first of the season sealed a 16-for-18 performance from distance for the team to set a new NCAA single-game record.

The 6-2 Banska Bystrica native competed with the Slovakian U16, U18 and U20 national teams in division B prior to her arrival at Iona.

Originally slated to host in 2021, the western Chinese capital of the Sichuan Province, Chengdu will host the biennial event which has not taken place since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
